Trauma Informed, Residential Therapy

Therapeutic Model

New Moon has partnered with a clinical psychology-led service that specialises in supporting organisations to develop trauma-informed practice.

This service supports New Moon to embed a trauma-informed, therapeutic, residential service.

The approach used is informed by a comprehensive understanding of developmental trauma and utilises the Attachment, Regulation and Competency (ARC) model.

The ARC model is an evidence-based model specifically designed for residential services that identifies important childhood skills and competencies which are typically affected by traumatic stress and attachment disruptions.

All staff at New Moon have received extensive training to develop their therapeutic skills. A HCPC accredited psychological practitioner supports the home and the residential staff team.

They provide monthly psychological consultations and weekly team support and contact, developing a psychological understanding of the young people in placement and reflecting on current difficulties.

During sessions, the psychological therapist uses the Gibbs Model to develop a psychological formulation of the young person and their needs, with strategies to work proactively with emotional and behavioural dysregulation.

The ARC model provides a safe, secure foundation offering predictability, routine, and consistency. New Moon offers direct therapeutic input facilitated if there is clinical need.

Reflective practice is supported in the home to foster emotional connections between staff and young people and to develop resilience in working therapeutically with children who have experienced significant trauma.
